How Openline works

A sender pays to reach someone. The card is authorized, not charged, and it's only charged if a reply arrives before the window closes.

For senders

What am I actually paying for?

You're paying for a reply. Your card is authorized when you send your message, but not charged. It's only charged if you get a response within the window shown on their page. If they don't reply, the hold is released and you pay nothing.

Do I pay every time I message this person?

No. You pay once to start the conversation. After they reply, you're talking directly by email and nothing further is charged.

What if they reply with a no?

That still counts, and you're still charged. A fast, honest no from someone hard to reach is worth having — you'd rather know than wait.

Can I choose what to pay?

Yes. They set a minimum and you choose any amount at or above it. They see the amount before they read your message and choose what to answer. Paying more doesn't guarantee a reply.

What if they never reply?

The hold expires and you're charged nothing. Your bank may take a few business days to release the hold.

Do I need an account?

No. You pay, you write, you're done.

Can I send anonymously?

Yes. Tick “Send anonymously” and the recipient sees your message but not your name or email. You'll still get their reply, relayed so neither side sees the other's address. Abusive messages are reviewed and blocked regardless of anonymity.

What makes a good message?

Be specific about who you are and what you want. People decline vague messages, and templates are blocked before payment.

How fees work

Openline keeps 20% of the amount paid. Stripe takes card processing of 2.9% + 30¢, deducted directly from your side. So on a $50 message you receive about $38. Below $10 processing takes a large share, and low minimums attract mass outreach — most people do better at $25 or more. You can change your minimum any time; it applies to new messages only.

How do I get paid?

Through Stripe. You'll connect a payout account and they'll ask for your name, address, and the last four digits of your SSN — that's federal law for anyone receiving payments, not our requirement. You sign up as an individual. You don't need a business or an EIN.

What do I have to do?

Reply to the email. That's it. The payment clears automatically when you do — you never need to sign back in.

What if I don't want to answer something?

Pass on it. One tap, and the sender isn't charged. Declining costs you nothing and there's no penalty.

What counts as a reply?

Any substantive response from your registered email address, sent before your window closes. It has to be more than a few words, and auto-replies and out-of-office messages don't count.

Can I change my minimum?

Any time, in settings. It applies to new messages only.

Is this allowed if I have a job?

Check your employment agreement first. Many employers prohibit accepting payment from third parties, and you shouldn't use a work email account for this. Openline is built for people who own their own time — consultants, freelancers, advisers.

Do I pay tax on this?

Yes. Stripe will issue you a tax form if you pass the threshold. We don't give tax advice.
